Disability Area
Since inception MPVSS is making efforts for development and rehabilitation of children and adults with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (PwIDDs). This include the following disabilities :
Mental retardation
Mental retardation or intellectual development disorder is a generalized neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by significantly impaired intellectual and adaptive functioning. It is defined by IQ score below 70 in addition to deficits in two or more adaptive behaviours that affect every day, general living.
Cerebral Palsy
It is a group of permanent movement disorders that appear in early childhood. It is caused by paralysis of locomotor area of brain which is non progressive. Signs and symptoms vary between people. Often problems include poor coordination, stiff and weak muscles, trouble swallowing or speaking, and tremors among others. There may also be problems with sensation, vision and hearing. Cerebral palsy may or may not be accompanied by mental retardation.
Autism
Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by impaired social interaction, verbal and non verbal communication, and restricted and repetitive behaviour. They do not make eye contact and focus on paying attention to anyone. Signs typically develop gradually, but some children with autism will reach their developmental milestones at a normal pace and then regress. Autism may or may not be accompanied by mental retardation.
Multiple Disabilities
It is a term for a person with several disabilities, such as a sensory disability associated with a motor disability. Individual usually has more than one significant disability, such as movement difficulties, sensory loss, and/or a behavioural or emotional disorder.
Apart from the above MPVSS has been working for persons with other disabilities also. Through physiotherapy and occupational therapy children and adults with locomotor disability, sensory impairment, fine motor movements, ADHD, behavior problems etc. are treated. Through IED project it has worked for and through CWSN hostels it is working for children with hearing disability, visual disability, locomotor disability and mental retardation. Through comprehensive eye health CBR project it worked for persons with eye diseases, low vision and blindness. It also worked for deafblind children to some extent. Thus, MPVSS is working in cross disability area.
